Chemistry 11
Today we kept working on Lab 1A. It is a loooong lab, so don't worry if you have only filtered your calcium hydroxide.
We took notes on matter and on the properties of matter including examples of descriptive and quantitative properties.
Homework: read Hebden pg. 41-42 Do pg. 43 #1-4

Today we reviewed questions about measurement and significant figures from the Hebden homework. I collected #42, 44, 48 and 49 from Hebden.
We started Lab 1A and you all should have gotten to the point of weighing out 3 grams of calcium hydroxide. Hebden homework: pg. 37 #55, pg. 39 #56 abcde, pg. 40 #57abcde

Today we discussed the fact that besides water there are four main types of chemical compounds in our bodies. They are: Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids (fats) and Nucleic Acids. One thing they all have in common is that they are all polymers (chains of repeating units).
We looked at how polymers are made: By dehydration synthesis and how they are broken down into their small units: By hydrolysis.
Next we looked in depth at carbohydrates and learned of some monomer and polymer names.
HOMEWORK: Complete Section A part C) Biological Molecules of the Cell for tomorrow.
Second Block: We did a lab on Antacid Buffers. This will be due next Friday Feb. 10th.
