 Today I collected the questions on page 69 that were assigned yesterday.  Next we took notes on NUTRIENTS and the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.  If you missed class, you can get a photocopy of these notes.

Today we finished off some notes on microscopes and cells.  Make sure you know how to calculate total magnification low, med. and high power (multiply the eyepiece x the objective lens).  Also know how field of view changes as you increase magnification (it decreases as you go from low- high)

Today we did a little demo on different household acids and bases using an acid and base indicator.

Today we wrote our SAFETY QUIZ.  Great work everyone!  Next we completed our tour of the classroom looking at lots of scientific equipment.  Make sure you keep the handout with pictures of the equipment for future reference!

Today we added to our notes on acids and bases.  If you were away, check with someone who was in class to get these notes.  Next we got THIS notesheet to go with THIS power point.  We finished up to and including all the functions of water.  

Finally we got our MODULE questions.  These questions get turned in at the end of the unit.  I will give you "check points" each night of where you should be at.  Make sure you do the reading in the textbook as well.  Tonight read chapter 2.3:  Chemistry of Water and answer Part A (role of water) and Part B (acids/bases) in the module.  Module questions are found HERE.

Today we practiced for the safety quiz.  Make sure you go over the WHMIS symbols and what they stand for.   Below is the WHMIS video.  Next we took some notes on Scientific Method.  The power point is found HERE and the notesheet that goes with it is HERE.  Next we answered some questions about qualitative and quantitative data by doing the instant practice questions on page 475.

Today we continued with our notes on Chemistry Review and Homeostasis.  Power point is here and note sheet here.  For homework:  Read Section 2.1 (Basic Chemistry) and 2.2 (Molecules and Compounds).  Do the Check Your Progress at the end of each section.  If you only have the "Giraffe book", here are the questions for

 Welcome to High School!

You are all settling in well to school and all the new information coming at you.  Make sure you can use the lock on your locker, as this will be a good place to keep textbooks so you don't need to move them all around.  I love opening locks, so please ask me for help if you need it.

 BIG old SQUID dissection day.  If you missed it, don't worry:  We saved you some squid!   First we watched the video below to look at how the Cephalopods (including squid and octopus) are different from other mollusks.  Next we did THIS lab.  (pages 5-9)  We have not done the post lab discussion questions (but don't worry, you only need to do # 1 and # 2).

Today we started our next unit:  BACTERIA.  We started off filling in THIS note-sheet with THIS power point.  Next we did THIS colouring sheet.  Finally we finished off the Distribution and Abundance of Bacteria lab by writing a conclusion.  This lab is due on FRIDAY.  Some tips for Conclusion:

1. Restate the purpose of the experiment and your procedures.
2. Describe the results or findings and if they support your hypothesis.
3. Mention what you've learned from the experiment.
4. Note any errors or uncertainties that could affect the results.

Today we reviewed for the Evolution/Taxonomy Test coming up on Tuesday, April 8th.  Unit D and E from the text.  Check yesterday's blog for the two practice tests.  

The written Evolution Unit Review is found HERE.  This is due on Tuesday. 

Finally we looked at our bacteria and did THIS worksheet (2nd page only) to calculate the number of bacteria cells we would have after 8 hours.
