Biology 11

Today we wrote a quick question quiz on evolution.

Took notes on Genes/DNA from Power Point.

Answered some questions about moth Natural Selection in industrial England.

DIDN'T get to the Evolution of Skin Colour Video today.  Make sure we watch it on Monday!!

Biology 12

Today we finished off the Osmosis and Diffusion Lab.  Purple sausage fest!  The lab was due at the end of class.

Next we got a new Module on cell membranes and transport.    Questions up to and including diffusion are due on Monday........and there could be a quizeroony on Monday too.

Thursday 28 September 2017

Biology 12

Today we took notes on cell membranes and osmosis and diffusion.

We started a lab on osmosis through a semi permeable membrane.  Stay turned for the sausage results tomorrow!

Module questions due tomorrow:
ix) mitochondria
x) cell membrane

Homework quiz tomorrow is on Golgi------Lysosomes in the module.

Biology 11

Today we took notes on Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection and the types of adaptations that organisms can have.   Link to interesting article about phermones.

We did the variation lab which involved measuring grasshopper femurs and our wrist circumferences.    The lab was due at the end of class.

Quick quiz on Friday:   List and describe the four main pieces of evidence for evolution
(Fossils, embryo structure, homologous structures, molecular evidence)

Tuesday 26 September 2017

Biology 12

Today we got back our biomolecules test:  corrections due next class.

Notes on the Cell and Cell Organelles (Power Point)

We watched Crash Course in Biology, Hank is the best!   Eukaryopolis.....so great

Module Questions Due next class:  vi) Golgi     vii) Vacuoles/Vesicles      viii) Lysosomes

Homework quiz on the previous day's questions.  (Cell structures up to and including ribosomes)

Biology 11

Today we went over Evidence for Evolution in detail......

Make sure you can list and decribe the four major evidence points.

Took notes on Darwin's Theory of Evolution and variation.

Due on Wednesday:  Questions from the PBS series on evolution (see Friday's blog entry)

Friday 22 September 2017

Biology 12

Today I collected:  The buffer lab and the plant/animal cell colouring assignment.

Due on Tuesday:  Cell Structures Module Questions  (A)-Types of Cells and (B)-Cell Organelles up to and including (v) ribosomes.

Wednesday 20 September 2017

Biology 11

Today in Bio land we wrote our Ecology Quest.   Next we worked on the Evidence for Evolution Worksheet (Due on Friday, September 22)

We went to the IT lab to check out the PBS series on evolution.  Go to you tube and search for PBS video clip series on evolution.  Link HERE

Biology 12

On Friday we finished off the Biomolecules Unit with a long power point for Friday afternoon, yipee!

You should complete Lipids section of your module and do the Proteins (#1-6)

Remember that your Buffer Lab is due on Friday Sept. 22

Biology 11

On Friday we finished off our group Quadrat Plant sampling lab.  Well done on these.  Looks like twin flower might be our winner for the highest density.

Make sure you turn in your worksheet on Populations.

We finished off the material for the Ecology Unit.  Most of you remembered biological succession from last year.

Tuesday 12 September 2017

Biology 12

Quiz on Water Tomorrow.  Make sure you understand how water's polarity allows hydrogen bonding between water molecules.  Also be able to list and explain the biological importance of water.

We completed the Power Point presentation on Lipids.

Module questions due next class:  (Ciii) part B disaccarides and C polysaccarides  as well (v)Lipids #1-5

Biology 11

Today I gave back pg. 515 #10 and #11.  Make sure you have completed those.  We prepared for the field trip Quadrat lab by adding our randomly selected grids onto graph paper.

Populations worksheet needs to be completed by Thursday.

Family Studies

Today we were introduced to our next assignment:  Family Traditions/Ceremony Power Point.

You will be submitting an individual Power Point to me with your family and then presenting a Power Point about a current or past culture.   We will start per evaluating presentations next week.

Sunday 10 September 2017

Biology 11

This week we were introduced (reviewed) the Scientific Method.  Our first Unit is Ecology.  This is a short Unit all in chapter 20 of your text book.

Make sure you bring back your permission forms for next week's field trip to Begbie Falls.

Family Studies

Last week in Family studies we looked at the structure of the Canadian Family and how it has changed over time.   We also started making our family's genogram and it will be due on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Biology 12

This past week in Bio 12 we reviewed some Chemistry concepts that will help us with the Biomolecule section of the course.

We looked at Acids and Bases and their functions in biological systems as well as water and it's importance.   Synthesis and hydrolysis reactions were touched on along with an introduction to carbohydrates.

You should have Module Questions:  A, B and C (i) and C (ii) completed for Monday

Biomolecules are all found in chapter 2 of the text book.
