Life Science 11

 Hi Bio Besties!   I have now left the building and you are in Mr. Roskam's good hands:) 

I left him lots of things to do with you, so here is a list of what will happen and links for when I'm away.  

Wednesday/Thursday April 24-25:  Outside protist in pond water collection!  Time to search the world for little critters in water.  We are looking for single celled EUKARYOTIC creatures (but you might see other things as well).  When you come back from your collection walk, you will be doing a lab.

 Today we looked at the results of our Antibiotics vs. Bacteria lab and recorded the results in a table.  We don't have all the information for E. Coli since it needs to grow some more in the incubator.  

Next we worked on the bacteria review ---For the QUIZ ON TUESDAY and watched the video below on antibiotic resistance.

Life Science 11

 Today we learned how to use sterile technique in the microbiology lab.  See the first 4 minutes of the video below.  Next we did a lab:  Antibiotics vs. Bacteria.  We finished off the Abundance and Distribution of Bacteria lab and turned it in as well as the Prokaryote colouring worksheet.  Finally we got a review for the bacteria quiz coming up on Tuesday, April 23.

 Today we finished taking notes on bacteria.  Power point is HERE.  Next we worked on prokaryote coloring (from yesterday's post).  This is due in your double block.  Also due in your double block is the distribution and abundance of bacteria lab with results (as a graph) and conclusion.

Life Science 11

Today we wrote our taxonomy quiz.  Next we looked at the results of our abundance and distribution of bacteria lab found HERE.  Make sure you bring your lab back to school next week to write a conclusion and make a graph of your data.   

Finally we worked on our Animal taxonomy project HERE.  Make sure you are able to finish this up by Friday's class.

Today we went over Cladograms and talked about their connection to the taxonomy unit.  We made our own cladograms and analyzed one.    Note sheet and worksheet HERE.

 Today we took notes on Taxonomy.  Note sheet is HERE and power point HERE.  Next we watched the videos below.  The second one will help you make a dichotomous key for the creatures found on the shark worksheet HERE.   Make sure you have someone go through your key to see if it works!





Environmental Science 12

Today we talked about food sustainability and watched the video below to see how Las Vegas deals with its food waste.  Tomorrow we will go to the community kitchen to help make a meal from the food recovery program.

Below is a good video on the types of natural selection.  Don't worry about the term "Hardy-Weinberg" equilibrium, it just means the alleles are in equilibrium.

Today we looked at the types of natural selection with THESE notes.  

Next we watched the short video on the 5 fingers of evolution. (5 ways that evolution can happen)

Today we finished our Reflectivity Apparatus lab.  Next we watched a Zoom presentation by the UBC faculty of Food Systems, Nutrition and Applied Biology.  Tomorrow and Friday we will be out and about in the community!   Wear some good shoes for walking and proper clothing to be outside.

Today we finished off taking notes from the Draw down solutions video:  Reducing sources.  Make sure you have notes that identify the major causes of greenhouse gas emissions in the world.

Next we looked at some moss (water) under the microscope and tried to find some tardigrades (water bears)  Video below:

Today we talked about the virus unit and what you need to review before the quiz tomorrow.    The review questions:  Viruses:  Structure and Nature are due tomorrow.

Major ideas in the unit: 1) Structure of a virus particle.  2) Lytic vs. lysogenic cycles (explain steps in the lytic cycle).     3) Immune System -1st, 2nd and 3rd lines of defense

Next we took some short notes on evolution and finally did a short lab:  Natural Variations Lab.  Make sure you bring this back tomorrow to complete the questions and graph.

 Today we practiced for our Virus Unit Quiz coming up on Tuesday.  We worked on the review questions:  Viruses:  Structure and Nature.  Next we played some review games with the vocabulary words found HERE.  and some Kahoots.

 Today we went for a LONG walk on our quest to find rocks and moss for our TERRARIUMS!!   They look great!

Today (and yesterday for the other class) we spent the first block finishing off the Virus Project.  This project is due Monday, March 4.  Next we did a viral spread lab where we had to figure out who started the spread of a virus.  Finally we started on the Virus Review.  Review is found HERE and the virus test is coming up on Tuesday, March 5.

Today we worked on our Draw Down Solutions Project.  See Friday's post for the assignment.  We also got the jar being used for our terrariums set up and ready to go for Thursday.  Come prepared to go outside and do some rock hunting and a moss mission on Thursday.

 Today we wrote our quest on CELLS unit and turned in the unit review questions.  Next we finished off the virus notes from yesterday and watched the AMOEBA sister video below.  Finally we started on our own virus project.  This can be done on office 365 in word.  Project is found HERE.  It is due next FRIDAY, March 1.

Today we continued to work on our DRAWDOWN projects.  (See yesterday's blog post).   Next we did a short group activity to calculate the carbon dioxide emissions savings from biking or walking to school EVERY DAY!!  We also watched a few more minutes of the draw down solutions video on decreasing sources.

Environmental Science 12

Today we took some notes on the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Carbon cycles.  Next we did a worksheet on the carbon cycle.  Next block we went outside and did a lab that involved measuring air temperature in different locations.  Finally we started to think about a research project around the Drawdown solutions library.  Research project is HERE and Website is HERE.  

We will start working on this project next week.
