Anatomy and Physiology 12

Ms. Wood is finally back in class!  On Friday we started a project on CELLS.  The project is found HERE.  If you want to see an example of a project that was previously completed, check HERE.   On Friday we will have a quick quiz on cells and organelles.   CHAPTER 3 Module questions are due on Friday.

Ms. Wood is finally back, and we are figuring out what we need to finish up in the CELLS unit!   First of all, make sure you have turned in questions on page 39.  #1-7.  Also:  Plant vs. Animal cell organelle coloring sheet.

Anatomy and Physiology 12

 Today we wrote our BIOMOLECULES test.  Well done everyone!  Next we did some CELL colouring.  These cells are found HERE and HERE.

Today we worked HARD on review after we took notes up to chloroplasts using the power point HERE and the note sheet HERE.   

Next we worked on the two test reviews for the test on Wednesday or Thursday.  CHAPTER 2 BIOMOLECULES!!  A reminder that your module questions up to and including nucleic acids are due on the test day.   See yesterday's blog for the answer key.  OMIT #4 and #9 from the Unit 1 Topic 1 Review

Today we 1) finished off the AMOEBA sisters video found below and recorded the function of the organelles listed.  

2) Next we wrote notes on OSMOSIS and DIFFUSION.  Notesheet is found HERE and power point is HERE.   

3) We set up the lab on OSMOSIS using page 46

4) We started off a colouring organelles sheet.  This does NOT need to be completed for homework

Today we did some review on the board and then we set up a biomolecules review game.  We will play the fun, fun game on Monday.

Anatomy and Physiology 12

Today we did the Macromolecule Murder Mystery.  Well done solving this heinous crime!   If you missed the lab, we have some data for you to analyze found HERE.  

Next we took some notes on Nucleic Acids from the power point.  These are found HERE.  Finally we continued on the module questions.  You should be done up to and including proteins (v) by Friday.

Today we finished off some notes on microscopes and cells.  Make sure you know how to calculate total magnification low, med. and high power (multiply the eyepiece x the objective lens).  Also know how field of view changes as you increase magnification (it decreases as you go from low- high)

Anatomy and Physiology 12

Today we wrote the water/acid/base/buffer quiz.  Yahoo!  First quiz done!

Next we worked on our Buffer Lab.  This lab with a conclusion is due on Monday.  

Finally we finished all the notes on carbohydrates and built our own glucose molecule.

Today we had a great discussion about the meaning of our first unit:  Biology.  What does it mean to be alive?  What characteristics do all living things share?  We took notes on this.

Next we watched a video as introduction to microscopes.  The video is found below:


Finally we labelled the parts and functions of a compound light microscope.   These parts and functions are found on page 12.

Today we did some review of Scientific Method and did a test your own hypothesis lab.

First we did THIS worksheet to practice the steps of Scientific Method.  Next we worked on THIS lab to test our own hypothesis about reaction rates.  

Make sure you have completed this lab for homework with a graph and a conclusion.

Anatomy and Physiology 12

Today we did an acid/base lab to determine which Antacid was the most effective against stomach acid.  The lab is found HERE.  Bring the lab back to complete on Friday if you need to.  

Next we continued with notes on Biomolecules and we had a great discussion about CARBOHYDRATES!!  Power point is HERE

For homework:  Read Chapter 2.4 and complete Module Part C, but only C i) Overview and C ii) Synthesis and Hydrolysis

Anatomy and Physiology 12

Today we did a little demo on different household acids and bases using an acid and base indicator.

Next we looked at a small section of our notes on organic chemistry and functional groups.  The power point is found HERE- goes along with yesterday's note sheet.     

We finished the water lab from last class and then did a FUNCTIONAL group handout.  This handout is found HERE 

You should also have completed the module questions Part A and Part B.  We went over some of the answers in class.

Today we wrote our SAFETY QUIZ.  Great work everyone!  Next we completed our tour of the classroom looking at lots of scientific equipment.  Make sure you keep the handout with pictures of the equipment for future reference!

Next we went through the power point notes on Scientific Method and finished filling those out.  The notesheet is here and the power point is here.

Biology 12

Today we added to our notes on acids and bases.  If you were away, check with someone who was in class to get these notes.  Next we got THIS notesheet to go with THIS power point.  We finished up to and including all the functions of water.  

Finally we got our MODULE questions.  These questions get turned in at the end of the unit.  I will give you "check points" each night of where you should be at.  Make sure you do the reading in the textbook as well.  Tonight read chapter 2.3:  Chemistry of Water and answer Part A (role of water) and Part B (acids/bases) in the module.  Module questions are found HERE.

Today we practiced for the safety quiz.  Make sure you go over the WHMIS symbols and what they stand for.   Below is the WHMIS video.  Next we took some notes on Scientific Method.  The power point is found HERE and the notesheet that goes with it is HERE.  Next we answered some questions about qualitative and quantitative data by doing the instant practice questions on page 475.  

Finally we learned the names of lab equipment by going around the classroom and naming the equipment.  Use THIS sheet (last 2 pages) to help you practice the "fancy" scientific names of things.

Today we did some more safety practice!!  Make sure you know the WHMIS symbols we watched the video below and filled in a worksheet to practice these.  


Next Ms. Wood and Tucker tried an experiment that did not work out well!  Next time we can do it!!

Finally we practiced using triple beam balances to measure mass of a beaker.

Today we focussed on SAFETY!!  We made a map of the classroom and drew all the safety equipment and explained how to use it.  Next we read and discussed the safety rules in the front of the textbook starting on pages:  xviii

Anatomy and Physiology 12

Today we continued with our notes on Chemistry Review and Homeostasis.  Power point is here and note sheet here.  For homework:  Read Section 2.1 (Basic Chemistry) and 2.2 (Molecules and Compounds).  Do the Check Your Progress at the end of each section.  If you only have the "Giraffe book", here are the questions for 

Section 2.1:  1. Identify why the key elements in the Earth's crust would differ from those present in living organisms.

2. Identify the protons, neutrons and electrons within a calcium atom.

3. Explain how radiation can be both beneficial and harmful to humans.

4. Explain the differences between oxygen 16 and oxygen 18.


Section 2.2:  1. Identify when carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen gas (N2) are considered molecules, compounds, or both.

2. Describe why a carbon atom (C) is capable of forming four covalent bonds

3. Explain why hydrogen ions form polar bonds that have a partially positive charge.

 Welcome to High School!

You are all settling in well to school and all the new information coming at you.  Make sure you can use the lock on your locker, as this will be a good place to keep textbooks so you don't need to move them all around.  I love opening locks, so please ask me for help if you need it.  

Today we got our textbooks and then did a textbook "TOUR".  This worksheet is found HERE. (we only did the front page).  We also completed a get to know me assignment.  This is found HERE.  

We did a little bit of Science Safety by reading and discussing page 475 in the textbook covering WHMIS symbols.  

Finally we got our course outlines and the parent information sheet.  Please have a parent sign this and bring it back tomorrow.   Course outline and parent permission HERE.

I'm excited to work with you this semester.  We started today off by picking up our textbooks.  Next we did a get to know me sheet found HERE.  You also wrote out some excellent advice for Grade 8 students to help them get through high school.   

Next we started taking notes using THIS notesheet using THIS power point.  We only completed the Scientific Method section.  

Finally for homework:  Read the Process of Science section in Chapter 1 of your textbook.  

(Either 1.3 or 1.4 depending on the edition).
